Education Laboratory

Ed Lab enrichment opportunities are designed as positive sessions, focusing on the child's strengths, needs and interests. ​

Future teachers are coached as they develop new strategies and skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Open communication with families is also an important part of the Ed Lab experience.​

Ed Lab future teachers plan individualized lessons for each of their twenty sessions. It is important to note that this is not a time for completing homework; rather, it is a time for children to be actively engaged and enjoy the learning process while building skills aligned with North Carolina standards and grade-level expectations.​

1:1 Enrichment Opportunities Provided

Through individualized one-on-one instruction, future teachers create meaningful literacy experiences that strengthen students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening, and comprehension skills. Learning opportunities are designed to be interactive, student-centered, and aligned with individual needs and interests. Students respond to reading through hands-on projects, creative arts and crafts, writing activities, dramatic play, discussion, and other authentic literacy experiences that foster both skill development and a love of reading.​

The Ed Lab provides engaging, individualized mathematics instruction through hands-on learning experiences designed to build conceptual understanding and confidence. Pre-service teachers use a variety of manipulatives, visual models, and interactive math tools to help students make meaningful connections to mathematical concepts and problem-solving strategies. Math learning is reinforced through the integration of literature with mathematical themes, commercial and teacher-created games, technology resources, and real-world applications. Students are encouraged to explore, discuss, and apply mathematical thinking while participating in meaningful skills practice tailored to their individual learning needs and goals.​

Ed Lab Schedule

The Education Lab offers enrichment opportunities for school aged children throughout the school year. Our experiences take place Monday through Thursday between the hours of 3:00 – 6:00 pm.

Each enrichment session is approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. At the start of each semester, pre-service teachers and families will decide on a regular schedule, meeting 2x per week for a total of 20 sessions.

Space is limited to the number of future teachers enrolled in connected courses at the start of each semester.​​

Ed Lab Fees

Fees are used to support the operation of the lab and materials for children using the lab. 

  • Face to Face in the UNCW Main Campus Ed Lab (Elementary reading and/or math)
    20 sessions/ $225​
  • Online via Zoom (Elementary reading and/or math)
    20 sessions/$150

Sign Up for 1:1 Enrichment

The Ed Lab is open for sessions Monday through Thursday from 3:00–6:00 PM. Individual schedules are arranged each semester between the pre-service teacher and participating families.​

A nominal fee is required for services, depending on the modality you choose. Please complete the “Preference Sign-Up” form. Note that a separate form must be submitted for each child.​

A member of the Ed Lab team will email additional information at the start of each semester (August and January) based on the preferences you indicate for your Learning Opportunity with final steps for registration and placement.​
