Dear Seahawk Community,
At UNCW, we pursue opportunities at every turn, expanding knowledge through the actions of our students, faculty, staff and community partners. Every day, I see how this shared commitment transforms information into impact.
This edition of UNCW Magazine highlights the power of collaboration and innovation across our campus. From AI research led by Professor Julian Keith and Associate Professor Daisyane Barreto to a $500,000 endowment advancing community flood readiness, faculty research enhances our vibrant and dynamic community.

Applied learning is at the heart of the UNCW experience. Check out the high-tech research conducted by Charlie Caputo ’26, a member of our first graduating class in intelligent systems engineering. Innovation also comes alive in the Smart and Intelligent Physical Systems (SIPS) Laboratory, where Assistant Professor Laavanya Rachakonda and her students are growing the seeds of technology into real world “farm bots.”
In the Cameron School of Business, faculty play a vital role in building connections, intentionally matching Executive MBA students eager to apply their skills with community partners who need an extra set of hands, fresh thinking and actionable insight. As programs like the Watson College of Education’s Teaching with Joy remind us: how we show up for each other matters.
This philosophy reflects our commitment to each other and the Seahawk community. Alumni and donors play a powerful role in sustaining and strengthening this environment by sharing your time, expertise and resources with today’s students. For nearly 80 years, you have helped our university keep soaring. Thank you.
